Garden and Flower Show 2016

ECOTOURISM AND THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

The objectives of the innovative Ghana Garden and Flower Movement and its flagship activity, the Ghana Garden and Flower Show are found to be consistent with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Movement seeks to contribute to the realization of these goals in Ghana. Ghana Garden and Flower Movement can help in creating and sustaining the attitudes and behaviours that facilitate this new framework.

The SDGs are focused on areas of critical importance for humanity and the planet outlined in the 5 Ps of:

Objectives Of The Un Sustainable Development Goals

  • People – determined to end poverty and hunger.
  • Planet – determined to protect the planet from degradation, including through sustainable consumption and production.
  • Prosperity – determined to ensure that all human beings can enjoy prosperous and fulfilling lives and that economic, social and technological progress occurs in harmony with nature.
  • Peace – determined to foster peaceful, just and inclusive societies which are free from fear and violence.
  • Partnership – determined to mobilize the means required to implement this Agenda through a revitalized Global Partnership for Sustainable Development.

Ghana Garden and Flower Movement is helping Ghana achieve the above, through the following means:

  • Job Creation– We believe that with the right policies, national and individual orientation and drive, our rich flora and fauna could provide jobs to some of the jobless in our country.
  • Income and Foreign Exchange Generation –Countries such as USA, Holland, Kenya and Ethiopia earn millions of dollars annually from the horticulture and floriculture business. The Movement is designed to help generate the required awareness and positive attitudes and behaviours towards horticulture and floriculture in Ghana with the result also of helping to generate much-needed income and foreign exchange for the country.
  • Health and Beauty – The Movement seeks to provide a constant reminder to all that plants have medicinal and psychological benefits and that flowers particularly, are a beautiful sight to behold and enhance our external environment.
  • Environmental Conservation – Flora and fauna preserve the environment and hence human life. Cultivation of gardens and flowers in our surroundings contributes to the preservation of our environment. It helps us save resources, as for example, it helps to keep our homes cool, our surroundings clean and healthy and help us to spend less on health issues.
